Happy Monday Reader,
Career changes are something I coach people through often, and right now I'm working with someone in the middle of one. Over the last few sessions, we found it: a new niche that lights her up, one that actually makes sense for her skills and her life.
And now comes the part everyone wants to skip. Before she changes anything else, quits anything, announces anything, she needs to know if this idea is actually interesting to anyone besides her.
The Question That Actually Matters
So the real question isn't "is this a good idea." It's: how do I start testing this without risking everything I already have?
That's the question I want to answer for you today. Not "should you go for it", we already covered that. But "how do you actually start."
Testing Income Doesn't Require Quitting Anything
You don't need to quit your job to find out if your idea works. You don't need a launch, a website, or a logo. You need signal, real, honest signal from real people.
Here's how you get it, while you still have your paycheck, your safety net, and your evenings and weekends still yours to experiment with.
The Four-Week Income Test
Week 1: Get specific. Who exactly is this for? Not "people who want more freedom". Get specific: what do they do, what are they struggling with, what would they actually pay to solve? Write down 20 to 30 real people in your network who either fit that description or know someone who does.
Week 2: Start conversations, not campaigns. Reach out to those people personally. Not a survey. Not a post. A message, a call, a coffee. Ask about their actual problem before you mention your solution. Your network is your net worth, use it.
Week 3: Make a tiny, real offer. Not "would you be interested if..." Offer something small and real: a beta spot, a pilot session, a discounted first round. Ask for a yes and a small commitment, even just their time or a deposit. Opinions are free. Commitment tells the truth.
Week 4: Look at what actually happened. Not what people said they'd do. What they did. Did they reply? Did they show up? Did they pay? That's your signal, not the size of your audience, not how excited people sounded in the DMs.
Your Network Is Your Net Worth
This is the part people skip because it feels vulnerable. Reaching out personally feels riskier than posting online and waiting. But posting and waiting gives you noise. Reaching out gives you real feedback.
You already know people. You've already built trust with them. Use that. That coachee I mentioned? Her first three conversations came from people already in her life. Not strangers. Not ads. People who already trusted her enough to have an honest conversation.
Three Things That Aren't Testing
Building the whole thing first. A logo, a website, a course platform, before a single person has said yes to anything. That's not testing, that's hiding behind busywork.
Only asking people who love you. Your best friend will always say yes, I'd buy that. She's not your market, she's your cheerleader. You need reactions from people who don't have to be nice to you.
Waiting until it's perfect to ask. You don't need the full offer figured out to start a conversation. You need a rough idea and the willingness to hear no.
What I Want For You This Week
If you've been sitting on an idea, waiting for it to feel 100% ready before you tell anyone about it, this is your sign. You don't need to risk everything. You need four weeks, one honest list of names, and the willingness to actually ask.
Pick your week 1. Get specific about who this is for. That's it. That's the whole assignment.
What's Next For Me
This is my last week in Thailand before I head to Taiwan to spend time with my cousins there, which I'm really looking forward to. It's been such a good final stretch: incredible viewpoints, way too much fun with acro yoga, and lots of crafting. A really good note to leave on.
Sending you love (and a four-week plan that actually works),
Jess
P.S. Who's one person in your network you could reach out to this week about your idea? Hit reply and tell me who's on your list. ✨
