Happy Monday Reader,
I'm sitting at the beach in Koh Phangan with a coconut, and my nervous system is finally at ease.
I didn't realize how much I needed this until I arrived. The mountains in Kazakhstan were beautiful. But they were also a lot. Constant figuring things out. Constant not knowing where anything is.
Here? I know the beaches. I know the restaurants. I know where things are.
And my body just goes: okay, you're safe. You can breathe.
Finding Your Happy Places
This is the thing about sustainable nomadic life that nobody really talks about. It's not just about moving. It's about finding the places that actually calm you down. The places where your nervous system recognizes safety. Where you don't have to constantly orient yourself.
Where you can just... be.
This island is one of mine.
But Here's the Part I Need to Be Honest About
Today I received a message from someone I've been in touch with about going nomadic. He wrote to let me know he's postponing his dream. Not for a month. Not for three months.
For a whole year!!!
He's building a financial cushion first to make traveling more relaxed. Fair enough, that is a very wise call but setting a reminder for NEXT AUGUST? Without taking any additional action beforehand? Waiting for things to be "perfect" before making the leap?
I will tell you directly: That won't work.
The Year-Long Postponement Never Actually Happens
I've seen this pattern a hundred times.
Someone gets excited about going nomadic. They start googling on how much other people spend. They realize they don't have "enough" money saved. So they decide: I'll work for another year, save more, and then I'll go.
And then what happens?
They postpone again. Because they want even more security. Or life circumstances change. Or suddenly August feels too close and they need more time.
A year postponement becomes two years. Two years becomes "maybe someday."
It's not because they don't want it. It's because waiting creates inertia. Waiting gives doubt time to grow. Waiting makes you comfortable with the familiar, and suddenly the dream feels less urgent.
You Don't Need a Miracle (You Need Clarity and Action)
He also wrote: "I think I will only be able to leave next year, unless a miracle happens."
But here's what I know from six years of doing this:
You don't need a miracle. You need clarity. And you need to start today.
Not next year. Not when everything is perfect.
Because here's the truth: the people who actually go nomadic aren't the ones who wait for perfect conditions. They're the ones who get clear on what they need and start taking action now, with what they have.
They calculate their actual runway (not the fantasy runway Instagram says). They test an income stream while they're still employed. They make a decision and commit to a timeline that's reasonable and have clear action steps throughout this time, three months, six months, nine months. Not just wait another year.
A year of waiting is usually just a year of not starting.
What Actually Builds a Nomadic Life
Real momentum comes from:
Clarity: Knowing exactly what your runway needs to be and how to actually make money (now and on the road) to extend that runway
Structure: Having a real plan: income testing, skills mapping, timeline with checkpoints
Action: Starting today. Not next year. Today.
The financial cushion will come. But it comes while you're building it.
You build your runway by starting to test income now.
You build your confidence by taking small steps now.
You build your momentum by deciding today that this is happening.
Not someday. This year. This month.
What I Want For You This Week
If you've been postponing something... anything really... asking yourself to wait until conditions are perfect, I want you to hear this:
Yesterday was the best time to start.
Today is the second best.
Don't wait for a miracle. Don't wait for next year. Don't wait for more money or better timing or clearer conditions.
Get clear on what you actually need. Make a real plan. Take one action this week.
That's how dreams become real.
Where I Am (And Where You Can Be)
I'm in my happy place because I started six years ago. Not because conditions were perfect. But because I got clear and took action. Now I get to return to places like Koh Phangan. Places where my nervous system finally relaxes.
You can have that too. But it starts with a decision you make today. Not a reminder you set for next year.
Sending you love from the beach (and clarity about what actually works),
Jess
P.S.: Are you postponing something? What's one action you could take this week instead of waiting? Hit reply and tell me. ✨
